The winning creative concept, "Student Security" was submitted by Ryan Carroll and Andy Gass of Signal, a boutique advertising agency in Dallas, Texas. The board was very compelling, but it also required a terrific amount of sensitivity due to the subject matter of YOUTH AIDS PREVENTION for our targeted audience of kids between the ages of 11 and 18.

2004 DIRECTOR COMPETITION

The Kangaroo Project received seven director competition entries from Minnesota, New York, California and Texas.

2004 JURY - DIRECTOR

  • Brian deLorenzo, Producer - Fallon
  • John Borchardt, Producer - Campbell Mithun
  • Steve Griak, Freelance Director
  • Mark Storey, Producer "Chicago Story"
  • Ryan Carroll, Creative Director - 2004 Kangaroo Project Concept Winner

The 2004 Kangaroo Project Director Competition winner was Justin Staggs from Minneapolis. He had submitted an incredibly detailed board that used the winning concept as indicated but also brought a good amount of his own vision. His presentation was clear, concise and very creative. Justin had directed some music videos in the past but this would be his first commercial directing experience.

The combination of the young, creative talent of Ryan Carroll as Creative Director and Justin Staggs as Director was amazing. They were very enthusiastic about the production but also very receptive to all of the information given to them by the judges and other industry professionals involved. Justin worked extensively with Ryan Carroll and Andy Gass to make sure that they were communicating the creative concept message in the most compelling and yet sensitive way.

SPECIAL THANKS

In 2004, Nicole Erdmann took on the role of producer for The Kangaroo Project. Nicole was producer Julie Hartley's apprentice ("Joey") during the Kangaroo Project's first year and has been involved ever since. Nicole drew together an incredible group of industry professionals as well as working with Marie Domingo to make sure that every "Joey" had a professional, informative and productive experience. This year, Nicole added a "pre-production" day on the Saturday before the shoot where the joeys could see the boards, check out the equipment, talk to the AC's, the gaffer, the wardrobe and make-up people and generally ask questions in a very encouraging and non-threatening environment. The shoot involved over 40 high school student extras as well as 27 "joeys" that were mentored during the production process. And, although the project was envisioned as a "security camera" look, it was shot on 35mm Kodak film and degraded in post-production. Once again, many Minnesota film professionals as well as companies supported the Kangaroo Project by donating their time and resources.  Cinequipt/Lighthouse donated all of the equipment, Crash & Sue's provided all of the post-production and Absolute Music did the sound design.
